Paleoenvironmental and archaeological investigations at Qinghai Lake, western China: Geomorphic and chronometric evidence of lake level history

چکیده
Qinghai Lake, located on the northeastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (Qing-Zang Gaoyuan), is China’s largest extant closed-basin lake. Its position relative to major Asian climate systems makes it sensitive to global climate change. The lake has been the subject of numerous paleoenvironmental investigations including dating of shoreline features around the lake basin. Here we report new age estimates of shoreline features, geomorphic exposures and archaeological sites that contribute to the development of a lakelevel history for Qinghai Lake and a landscape model of the Qinghai Lake Basin. Lake highstands above 3230 m (w36 m above the modern lake level) appear to date to late MIS 5, w70–110 ka. The lake has had much more modest highstands since then: no evidence of MIS 3 lake stands higher than modern were found, and early Holocene highstands are no more than w12 m above modern. If the age of highstands greater than 3230 m is confirmed through future work, then the Qinghai Lake Basin hydrologic balance prior to w70 ka was dramatically different than after that time, including during the Holocene. A simple hydrologic balance model provides insights into the combination of precipitation, evaporation, and runoff generation needed to sustain the lake at 3260 m, the highest shoreline observed. A range of factors may explain the difference, primarily the relative strength of the East Asian monsoon. The basin was apparently subject to extensive alluviation during MIS 3, interrupted by widespread erosion and development of cryogenic features before and during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Loess that presently drapes much of the lower basin landscape began to be deposited after the LGM, w16–18 ka. The landscape model outlined here has implications for archaeological visibility of early human occupation of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. 2009 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA. All rights reserved.

Recovery of sequences and extent of ancient lake in Jazmourian Playa based on lake terraces in Quaternary
Extended abstract 1-Introduction The natural environment is affected by climate, and its changes have different geomorphic forms. The dominance of different climatic phases and changes in the balance of matter and energy cause different shaping systems in the environment. Ancient lakes are one of the geomorphic forms of the Quaternary period, and today many of these lakes are either complete...

This study was conducted for palynological investigation of recent deposits from east Isfahan in order to reconstruct past environmental conditions of this region. Segzi area is located in 30 km east Isfahan and Rangideh area is 65 km in south east Isfahan. In these areas it was seen, in depth of soil profile, dark layers containing organic matters. Soil samples were taken from five points and ...
متن کاملSedimentary archaeal amoA gene abundance reflects historic nutrient level and salinity fluctuations in Qinghai Lake, Tibetan Plateau
Integration of DNA derived from ancient phototrophs with their characteristic lipid biomarkers has been successfully employed to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions. However, it is poorly known that whether the DNA and lipids of microbial functional aerobes (such as ammonia-oxidizing archaea: AOA) can be used for reconstructing past environmental conditions. Here we identify and quantify ...
متن کاملMulti-Decadal Monitoring of Lake Level Changes in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau by the TOPEX/Poseidon-Family Altimeters: Climate Implication
Lake levels in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) provide valuable records for climate change studies. We use two decades of measurements (January 1993–December 2014) from the TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P)-family satellite altimeters (T/P, Jason-1 and -2) to detect lake level variations at 23 lakes along their repeat ground tracks every 10 days. We employ an optimal processing technique to obtain quality m...
متن کاملRock Magnetism of the Offshore Sediments of Lake Qinghai in the Western China
Lake Qinghai is the largest lake in China and situated in an important climate-sensitive zone on the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, making it an ideal place to study the environmental evolution of the northwest China as well as the interplay between the Asian monsoon and the westerlies in the late Quaternary. In this study, detailed rock magnetic measurements were carried out on th...
